Tibetan Mantra Flag Banner.
Mantra flags are printed on traditionally blue, white, red, green, and yellow fabrics. They are usually grouped in fives and always in the same order.
The five colors represent the five Buddha families and the five elements: blue for space and sky, white for air and clouds, red for fire, green for water, and yellow for earth.
Lung Ta Flags.
Lung Ta means wind horse. They are a constant presence that, from the tops of pagodas, roofs, and trees, symbolize an endless celebration filling the atmosphere with joy.
The main purpose of prayer flags is to be hung where the wind can carry and implement blessings.
The sun, wind, and rain eventually fade or wear out over time, subtly reminding us that all things are transient and temporary.
Tibetan Culture
We also know that Buddhist flags are particularly hung during Losar or the Tibetan New Year. This period coincides with the new moon in February, when they are widely integrated into the landscape.
They are embedded in Tibetan culture, a tradition still connected to the beliefs of the local population.
Another characteristic is that they are rectangular in shape and placed horizontally.
Uses of Tibetan Flags.
They are usually hung from top to bottom, preferably diagonally. Most often, from the highest part of a house to a tree below.
It is also common to place them at windows to receive their blessings carried by the wind.
It is important to consider that the flags must not touch the ground. Try to place them high so they are as far away from the ground as possible.
If the flags deteriorate over time, it is advisable to try to rehang them; if they tear, they can be tied. When they are really too worn out, they can be burned and the ashes scattered in the wind. Do not throw them in the trash.
