Hibiscus or Roselle Infusion Recipe.

  • 2 liters of water.
  • 20 hibiscus flowers or Guinea sorrel.
  • 1 to 2 stevia leaves or 30 g of brown sugar or honey.
  • A 5 to 7 cm piece of peeled ginger. Crush it sharply with a rolling pin on a cutting board.

This is a very simple preparation by decoction. You can flavor it as you like, but here is my favorite way to enjoy iced hibiscus tea.

  1. Hibiscus tea or infusion is prepared by decoction. Boil the water, then lower the temperature just before boiling to around 95 °C. (small bubbles on the pot walls)
  2. Put your flowers, stevia leaf, and ginger in the water. Stir occasionally to wet the flowers well as they sometimes struggle to sink. Keep a low heat for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat and let the infusion rest with a lid on to keep the aromas from escaping.
  4. Strain with a sieve; if you haven’t added stevia, now is the time to sweeten your infusion with honey to taste.
  5. Add lemon juice if you prefer to enhance the acidity.

Then, you can drink it warm or refrigerate it for more than four hours. It is recommended to drink the equivalent of one to three cups per day.

Note: You can make your herbal tea using only Roselle flowers like tea. However, stevia will sweeten naturally and calorie-free, while ginger will bring its strength and vigor.

Where to Buy Hibiscus or Roselle Tea?

These flowers are picked at mature bud stage (calyx), after flowering, when the petals fall. It is at this stage that hibiscus flowers concentrate their beneficial properties the most. They are then naturally sun-dried.

Warnings and Precautions About Hibiscus Flower Tea.

Hibiscus Sabdariffa herbal tea is generally very beneficial and tolerated by the vast majority of the population. Personally, I consume it without moderation up to 1 liter per day.

Caution: Only consume food-grade Roselle herbal tea. Not all hibiscus flowers are edible and some can be harmful to health.

There are also warnings regarding Roselle or Guinea sorrel.

  1. Avoid consuming hibiscus flower tea if you suffer from low blood pressure, as the action of hibiscus infusion could further lower your blood pressure. It is best to seek medical advice before consumption.
  2. Hibiscus tea may interact with certain medications used in cancer chemotherapy. In this case, please also consult a doctor before consuming hibiscus flower tea.
